Yeah, I've come to appreciate it more over the years. There's an interview in which Frank explains that he had Steve Vai overdub the vocals in "The Jazz Discharge Party Hats" on guitar to achieve an effect of a George Benson-ish style applied to weird, dissonant melodies that Benson would never play. It's not a song I listen to frequently but I do appreciate the experiment he was trying to do there. Also, "We Are Not Alone" and "Moggio" are great, and I like "The Radio Is Broken" too.

Funny, I recently decided that I want to buy the original LP of The Man from Utopia. Reason being that it's the only way to hear the original Vinnie Colaiuta drum tracks - they've been replaced with Chad Wackerman drum tracks on every single CD version of the album.

i was at a festival yesterday and during the soundcheck of one band, the bass player played the opening riff of zomby woof. way to go dude!

during the show, they played a lot of songs with odd time signatures, so the zappa influence was obvious!

That said, it does prove Steiner wrong about how the channel does not ban people based on his own opinions. Which proves my initial summation maybe still in this topic itself about the willingness to ban for personal opinion to censor the channel to the liking of the person running it

if steiner "controversially unbanned" you before you were probably not particularly well liked. i assume that if there's a consensus in the discord that one person is too much of a nuisance, that person will get banned as a result. i doubt steiner just goes around banning people he doesn't like left and right.

not saying i don't get your frustration. I'M not particularly well liked on this board, and if an admin decided to ban me from board 8 because "TOO MANY PEOPLE DON'T LIKE YOU LASA," i'd be pretty pissed. but at the same time, i have to admit i would understand it to some extent.

The CD version of BTHW was actually one of my first Zappa albums. I used to freaking love it, but that's probably because I was a dumb 13 year old kid who laughed his ass off at stuff like the Michael Jackson jokes in "Why Don't You Like Me?" >_> Nowadays, I'm not all that into it anymore.

It has its moments, though. "Stolen Moments" and "Jesus Thinks You're a Jerk" are great and "Any Kind of Pain" contains one of my favorite Zappa solos of all time. Most of the '88 versions of older Zappa songs ("Dickie's Such an Asshole," "Outside Now," "Hot Plate Heaven at the Green Hotel" and "What Kind of Girl?") work really well, too.

It has been assumed for a long time that the repeated guitar riff in the original, Captain Beefheart version of "The Torture Never Stops" (as can be heard on YCDTOSA Vol. 4) was taken from "Smokestack Lightning" by Howlin' Wolf, but I just saw someone suggest that it actually comes from this song. Eh, maybe but I still think "Smokestack Lightning" is more probable, given that both Frank and Beefheart loved Howlin' Wolf. Seems more likely to me that this band also copied the "Smokestack Lightning" guitar riff for this song (several people in the comments assume this as well).

Zappa News:
- As I said earlier, a new album was released on 3/29: Zappa in New York 40th Anniversary Deluxe Edition. It's a 5CD box set. It's available on Spotify.
- A different, shorter version of this album was released on vinyl on 3/29 as well: Zappa in New York 40th Anniversary Edition. It's a 3LP set.
- I usually don't discuss rereleases in Zappa News but eh, might as well: in honor of Record Store Day, The Guitar World According to Frank Zappa was released on vinyl on 4/13. This album was originally released on cassette only in 1987. If we count the albums of the Shut Up 'n Play trilogy separately (they were also released as one 2CD album), this is one of six Zappa guitar solo albums. The other five are Shut Up 'n Play Yer Guitar, Shut Up 'n Play Yer Guitar Some More, Return of the Son of Shut Up 'n Play Yer Guitar, Guitar and Trance-Fusion.

Yeah, it actually worked really well as my first Zappa album. Totally succeeds at containing a bunch of quality tunes and a nice (though obviously incomplete) overview of the many facets of Zappa music.

It's funny because the first proper Zappa albums I heard were Hot Rats and Apostrophe (')... and I didn't care much for Apostrophe (') and thought Cheap Thrills was way better >_> Immediately loved the fuck out of Hot Rats, though.

I would never discourage anyone to listen to Zappa but Thing-Fish is one of my least favorite Zappa albums >_> It also works way better if you're familiar with at least half of the Zappa catalog, as it contains a lot of inside jokes and deep cut references.

That being said, "Brown Moses" is amazing, yeah. "The 'Torchum' Never Stops" is really good, too. I also have a soft spot for "You Are What You Is," as it's one of the first Zappa tracks I ever heard (my dad owned the Cheap Thrills compilation). Nowadays, I'd rather listen to the original version of that song, though.
